Pre- & Postnatal Physiotherapy
Supporting Your Body Through Pregnancy & Beyond
Pregnancy is an incredible journey, albeit one that brings significant physical changes that can place new demands on your body. From a shifting centre of gravity to changes in hormones, muscle function, and posture, it’s no surprise that many women experience pain, discomfort, or movement challenges both during and after pregnancy.
Pre- and postnatal physiotherapy provides safe, effective support through every stage — and our physio team on the Sunshine Coast and Bribie Island can help you stay active, manage pain, prepare for birth, and recover confidently afterwards.
Read on to discover how an experienced pelvic floor physio can help support your pre- and postnatal journey.
Your Questions, Answered
-
As your baby grows, your body adapts and changes to accommodate the new life within you. These changes are completely normal but can lead to pain, discomfort or issues such as the following:
Lower back pain
Pelvic girdle pain
Carpal tunnel
Abdominal separation (DRAM)
Rib and mid-back pain
Pelvic floor weakness leading to urinary and faecal incontinence
Physiotherapy can help support you through your pregnancy so you can continue to move more comfortably and keep doing what you love.

Physiotherapy aims to assist you throughout your pregnancy journey - whatever that may look like. Some of the most common reasons patients visit our Minyama and Ningi physio practices are for treatment of the following conditions:
Pain relief and symptom management
Throughout your pregnancy, you may suffer from many musculoskeletal aches and pains. This is quite common throughout pregnancy due to the amount your body has to change to carry a baby. However, you needn’t suffer through without respite!
Physiotherapists aim to diagnose the cause of your problem and can perform hands-on manual therapy, targeted exercise and lifestyle advice to help reduce pain and improve mobility, as well as stretches you can keep up at home to make your pregnancy more comfortable.
Pelvic floor preparation
Your pelvic floor plays a vital role throughout pregnancy, birth and recovery. Prenatal physio aims to educate you on the importance of a strong pelvic floor. Pelvic floor training is important for reducing the incidence of urinary incontinence, urge incontinence, reducing second stage labour time and reducing the risk of tearing or requiring birth intervention (Zhang, Bo, Montejo et al., 2023; Delgado, Lemos, Marinho et al., 2025).
Exercise tolerance and maintenance
Staying active is one of the best things you can do during pregnancy. Exercise during pregnancy has been shown to reduce complications during the birthing process and improve health outcomes for both mum and bub (Cooper & Yang, 2023). This can include:
Reducing the risk of gestational diabetes
Reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia
Increase the chance of successful vaginal delivery and reduce the chance of emergency c-section
Reduce your risk of associated musculoskeletal conditions/pain
Reduce pelvic floor issues such as urinary incontinence
Reduce second-stage labour
(Cooper & Yang, 2023).
Physiotherapy can show you how to exercise safely and how to modify your activities as your pregnancy progresses. The goal is to see you strong, healthy and confident.

A physiotherapist from our team will externally assess your pelvic floor, core function, abdominal separation, urinary and faecal incontinence, posture and movement.
This will give a clear indication of how your body is healing. Your physiotherapist will then develop a personalised exercise program to help rehabilitate any areas of concern, whilst supporting a healthy pregnancy and recovery.
Physiotherapy can help you return to your sport and exercise of choice, including running, weightlifting and beyond.

Our state-of-the-art clinics are also equipped with TENS machines for birth preparation. Using a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machine is a drug-free way to support the body through the early stages of labour.
The machine sends gentle electrical pulses via pads placed on your lower back that distract the brain from pain signals, and help to release endorphins to improve your general affect. This can supply a sense of empowerment and control at the beginning of your birthing experience.
Simply contact our friendly team to arrange to book one of our TENS machines.
